He has played rugby professionally across Argentina, South Africa, Japan, Canada and France, and remains incredibly grateful that he was able to do what he loved all over the world.
When discussing sport at Westbourne House, Will said:
“I certainly loved sport at Westbourne House, and I always took it incredibly seriously. This was spotted by Mr Sharman, who scolded me for being too competitive at the Cottesmore six-a-side tournament. From him, I quickly learned good sportsmanship.
"I also had my favourite teacher, Kevin Smith, to admire in this respect. He came from a professional football and cricketing background and to us, he was a superstar. His understated competitive nature made me want to play each and every match for him.”
Will now runs his own renewable energy business in Somerset, Green Forest Renewables. This is equally as challenging as it is rewarding, and he has told us that he is “still learning everyday.”
She has since set up two production companies and performed KAREN, her one woman show, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at various venues across London.
Sarah speaks fondly of her Westbourne House drama training:
“I adored Westbourne House’s drama classes - they were the highlight of my week. I couldn’t wait for every Thursday and I went to every drama camp the school put on in the holidays. I just couldn’t get enough!
“Mr Cousens was my absolute favourite teacher; he was the first to really encourage me and make me feel that I had a talent for acting - it is down to him encouraging me to go for a drama scholarship at my next school that I had the confidence to go down this path in the first place.”
He is excited to take on this new challenge and honour.
His parents, upon hearing the news, said:
"Our first thoughts were to reflect on how lucky Finn was to have spent seven very happy years under the care and stewardship of such an incredibly talented, inspirational, and ambitious team of teachers, coaches and guides who represented all facets of the Westbourne House community. We enjoyed watching him grow, and it is enormously rewarding to see that all his efforts continue to pay off."
Fin was a Patrol Leader (house captain) in 2020 at Westbourne House and continued to show great leadership skills in his senior school as one of the four Heads. Extraordinarily, both Fin and his older sister Poppy have held the position of head boy/girl at Lancing College!
Pippa Sutcliffe, proud mum and former Head of English, said: “Westbourne House laid the foundations for both my two and gave them the confidence to go on and achieve. The leadership opportunities at Westbourne and the chance every pupil has to stand up in front of their peers and talk, act, read, debate, play music, sing in every year group, means that by the time they leave Westbourne they are confident in their abilities and take challenges in their stride."
Toby shared his stories of many happy years at Westbourne House, of starting his love of sport and 'running around' (including games of 'it' in the boundaries), of playing rugby until the age of 16, of changing sports, of his journey to the Olympics, of mentors and friends that keep you going, and of working incredibly hard towards your goal.
