At Westbourne House, we focus on using maths to solve problems with creativity and flexibility. This competition is aimed at top pupils in Years 7 & 8. It is a 60 minute, 25 question challenge aimed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency, to make students think. It is not about learning facts and regurgitating them.
"It is wonderful when you can really see the results of this problem-solving focus. This year it is reflected in the form of exceptional results in the prestigious and internationally recognised Junior Maths Challenge run annually by the UK Mathematics Trust."
Mrs Langford, Head of Maths Department
It has around a quarter of a million entrants; the top 8% (roughly) receive gold certificates of whom a select few are invited to take part in an extra 'Kangaroo' round; the next 16% get silver certificates and the next 25% gold.
90 Westbourne House pupils sat the competition and our pupils achieved 10 gold, 27 silver and 17 bronze certificates between them (60% of all our pupils sitting the test received certificates). Of the golds, a whopping eight students have been invited to sit the Kangaroo round, putting them in the top 3-4% of students nationally.
Special mention to Charlie W (best in school), Jiheon K (getting to the Kangaroo in Year 6) and also Filip A and Marco F (achieving Silver certificates in Year 5).
