Year 5 in the field

Year 5 embarked on a fantastic field trip in the glorious weather for their geography topic. They set out to create a land use survey: starting in the central business district, they looked at how the settlement of Chichester has been built up over time, and the changing geography of our city centres.

In the outer suburbs, they discussed the three main land uses – arable, pastoral and woodland - and even acted out the management of trees and how we can grow and use wood sustainably.

Back at school, they will make a land use model of their findings.

Mrs Pollock said: “The children had some brilliant answers to our questions and learnt a lot of useful words to describe our surroundings, such as central business district, residential and industrial. We ended up on the top of the hill at Halnaker and could see the city, developed areas and the surrounding countryside and coastline stretching out before our eyes. It was stunning.”
