Fire and Ice day
Year 2 pupils explored history, geography and science through their exciting Fire and Ice topic.
The children happily shared some of what they have been learning about with science teacher, Mr Brown:
“The Great Fire of London began on 2 September 1666.”
“We know about the Great Fire of London because Samuel Pepys wrote a diary about it.”
“We’ve learned about volcanoes.”
“We have learned more about the Arctic Circle.”
The children designed and made their own Tudor houses to recreate Pudding Lane. To help them to understand the rapid rate with which the fire spread, the children placed their houses on the playground in a line and estate manager Glenn and caretaker Matt set fire to the house at the end.
The children visited the science laboratories next to observe and take part in dry ice experiments. As you can imagine, the children showed a tremendous amount of curiosity and engagement.
Weald and Downland Museum
The Weald and Downland museum helped Year 2 to travel back in time. The children shaped bread during the ‘Fire in the Bakehouse’ workshop and used a flint and steel and straw to create sparks reminiscent of the Great Fire of London. In the tour through time, the children explored houses from Saxon to Tudor times.
