Understanding the spit at East Head

Year 7 pupils spent the day at the spit at East Head, West Wittering, with the Geography Department.

Pupils were placed in three groups and took turns in conducting fieldwork activities: first, Mr James introduced the pupils to coastal defences, including groynes, gabions, sea walls, replenishment and marram grass. Next, Mrs Pollock helped the children produce a field sketch of the spit and explained its formation. Finally, Mr Donald and Madame Bennison helped the children produce a survey of the litter on the beach and of the people using the beach.

The children now have a much better understanding of the formation of East Head and the issues involved in managing the area. In addition, the children have gathered lots of useful data to use in class.
