Textile Projects Update

Pupils are really excited about the latest addition to our art rooms: the heat press! The heat press gives the children the chance to create a professional finish in their design technology textile projects.

The heat press so far has been used by Year 5 for their pencil case project. They have tie dyed, sewed and individualised their pencil case with vinyl and the pencil case cleverly rolls up and ties shut.

Meanwhile in other textile projects, Year 3 pupils are crafting photo hanger pillow cushions, all individual and finished with colourful stitches.

In Year 4, they are designing their own soft toy, a project which helps the children to understand pattern making. In the photos, you can see a work in progress demonstrating the thinking being the various the layers.

Year 6 are making silk cushions and you can see two of the beautiful rainforest-esque designs in the photos.

Year 7’s needle felting project has a nature theme and the children have combined beautiful colours into their scenes, which are made by tapping the threads through the felt with a needle.

The challenge for Year 8 is to make pair of kimono slippers. You can see the various stages, taking it from recycled old yoga mat to near finished article in the photos.

Design Technology at Westbourne House runs on a rotation. After nine week, the pupils currently working in textiles will move onto food tech and then ceramics. In Years 6, 7 and 8, the pupils also work with resistant materials. All pupils also have a weekly lesson in art.
