Science Week in the Pre-Prep

Pre-Prep children had such a fun week of whizz, pop and bang celebrating British Science Week in the Pre-Prep!

Nursery's adorable ducklings stole the show during Science Week this year. They really captured the hearts of the Nursery and Pre-Nursery children, who were all able to give them a little cuddle. They also had such a giggle when the ducklings splashed them during their bath!

In Reception, the children used their senses to smell, hear and feel different items, predicting what they might be.  They saw the thrust that a blown-up balloon produced and turned water into a solid by adding kinetic sand, and then back into a liquid by adding salt. They also added food colouring to water to see if the petals of a white carnation would change colour.

In Year 1, the children created their own dinosaur habitats in the school grounds using natural materials they found. The children were very good at working as a team and listening to others.  They also investigated what happened to all the dinosaurs and have been learning about extinction. They watched a video, looked at non-fiction books and thought of their own ideas as to why dinosaurs no longer walk amongst us.

Mrs Rich taught the children all about ‘oobleck’ a type of slime that can be both a solid and a liquid at room temperature. They thought the story by Dr Suess called ‘Bartholomew and the Oobleck’ was hilarious, but perhaps the best part was making the ‘oobleck’ and getting to play with it to learn more about its properties.

Year 2 thought about shadows and went outside to explore how shadows are created. They had fun making their own shadows in the playground and experimented with making different types of shadows with opaque, translucent and transparent objects.

All the Pre-Prep children had the chance to visit the newly hatched ducklings in the Nursery. They had to be very quiet and it was quite fascinating watching the ducklings flap their wings and cheep softly to each other.
