Scarecrows support pollination

If you didn’t see them in the flesh, please take a look at our fabulous scarecrows our Year 4 pupils built for the Oving Scarecrow Day.

Driving through Oving, scarecrows were to be found all over the village and Westbourne House took two splendid creations along which were placed on the path running up to St Andrew’s Church.

Science teacher, Mrs Edwards, said: “It was wonderful to join in this brilliant community event with other schools and local groups. As we continue to be part of X-Polli:Nation, (a citizen science project to encourage everyone to become more involved in the environment and support pollinating insects), Year 4 decided that the scarecrows should also have some pollinator-friendly plants, including lavender, rosemary, sweet peas and nasturtiums.

“Some of the plants we had grown ourselves (in Year 4, 5 and 6 lessons) and some were donated by St Albans Church School in Havant as part of a plant swap. If you’ve been to the Pre-Prep recently, St Albans School has also donated the strawberry plants that are growing in the raised beds at the front of the building.”
