Reception children explore the world of work

What do people do all day?

As part of their topic 'What do people do all day?' Reception children have been busy learning about different jobs and professions.

Surgeon

Pupils heard from a real-life surgeon - Henderson's daddy! He taught them about the different people that he works with and some of the HPL superpowers that he draws on day to day. After demonstrating how to remove an appendix, he asked the children to practise their sewing skills to sew up their patients.

Construction worker

Reception classes have also been looking at the job of construction workers. After all, building is one of our Reception children's favourite thing to do! Everyone was very excited to welcome Sienna's daddy, who told the children all about his job; what he wears to keep safe, the tools and materials he uses and how important it is for all of the different trades to work together as a team. The children were also very interested to learn about how insulating bricks work to help to make our homes more energy efficient. The highlight of the occasion was having the chance to watch a new wall being built, which is now in our Early Years area for everyone to examine and admire.

Policeman

Next up was a policeman. The children could not believe their eyes when they looked out of the window and saw an ACTUAL police car!

"We were delighted to meet Police Sergeant Matt Chamberlain who told us all about his uniform and how it makes him recognisable as well as keeping him safe.  He also told us about all of the different jobs that he does and showed us the features of his car."

Firefighter

The children were lucky enough to meet not one, but four firefighters! West Sussex Fire Service came to teach our children about fire safety and the amazing work they do to protect us and save people.

The firefighters spoke about some of the incidents they deal with on the roads, in houses or large buildings, and even in the water! They have multiple uniforms to suit different working conditions. The children were fascinated by their equipment, which allows them to do their job as safely as possible, including the oxygen tanks that they carry on their backs.

"The children were amazed to hear that the fire truck can hold 4,800 bottles of water in its tank. They had some super questions and even learned a rhyme about fire safety! A morning well-spent."

Mrs Lewis, Reception teacher

West Sussex Fire Service deals with over 130 different types of incidents, so it was impossible to cover every single one, but questions from the children such as "What's the most difficult rescue you've ever done?" gave everyone a wonderful insight to the important work that the fire service does.

"The children recognised some of their HPL superhero skills in the work of the fire service, including empathetic and agile. Already they are preparing themselves for the world of work!"

Mrs Rogers, Reception teacher

Their favourite part of the experience was, without doubt, when they got to use the fire engine's hose and squirt the Pre-Prep playground with water! What a fantastic end to their topic learning.

Dentist

Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them nice and clean...

Our Reception and Nursery children were so excited to welcome a dentist (Baani's mummy) to school along with her dental nurse. The children learnt how to brush their teeth properly and what foods help to make 'happy teeth.'  Oral hygiene is a statutory requirement within the EYFS (Early Years foundation stage) framework and so this visit was not only a fabulous insight for the Reception children in their topic 'What do people do all day?' but also an educational visit which reinforced ideas about how they should take care of their teeth.

Each and every pupil embraced the visit, making lots of comments such as: "I have an Elsa tooth brush", "Your gums are pink" and, the sweetest comment of all: "Your mummy is great!".
