Investigating sustainability at the Olympic Park

The Year 8s really enjoyed their geography field trip to London's Olympic Park to study sustainability in an urban environment.

The pupils noted the environmentally-friendly features of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which hosted the 2012 Olympics, and they compared and contrasted the housing of Hackney Wick to the new housing in East Village.

The children mapped their route, through the new Westfield Shopping Centre, past The London Aquatics Centre and West Ham’s new football stadium and then visited the Energy Centre. They had lunch in the spectacular Velodrome prior to noting all the features of East Village (The Old Athletes’ Village).

This visit to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park gave the children a greater understanding of sustainability and has helped them understand the issues involved in creating a sustainable environment for the future.

“It was a great trip because we got to see a very different approach to building and how to be more eco-friendly. I really enjoyed it.”
