Incredible Performances at Virtual School Concert

The final school concert of the year is always a big occasion, and the Music Department were determined that this year should be no exception. Broadcast on Zoom, the concert attracted audience members from as far afield as Cornwall, with excited families crowding around screens with refreshments in hand, ready to enjoy the results of a term of Zoom music-making.

With the Year 8s unable to produce their end-of-year show, Oliver!, they instead took part in online singing rehearsals through the term, eventually filming the songs which were then put together by the music department. The result was a wonderful selection of uplifting tunes, which hopefully went some way to relieving the disappointment of not putting on the show.

The school’s instrumentalists were also out in force. Impressive solo performances came from Isabelle Aston (flute), Charlie Allday (piano), Fin Sutcliffe (Euphonium), Jemima Whitehead (violin), Daisy Timberlake (voice), and Elliott Hill (drums), whilst over seventy musicians recorded their parts for a performance of Siyahamba. The Orchestra also impressed with a performance of Lord of the Dance, all recorded individually at home.

Examples of pupils’ work were also featured: Year 3 created a performance of Jill Murphy’s book Peace at Last, complete with narration and percussion sound effects; Year 4’s work on Descriptive Music was showcased by Molly Atherley’s Storm composition on SoundTrap; Year 5 was represented by Penny Clarke, with her composition Dance Macabre; Year 6 by Alice Young’s Theme and Variation, representing their work on the Classical Period; Annabel Dodd in Year 7 performed her piano composition based on the Pentatonic scale, Bosham Sunrise; and Year 8, who have been studying Rap and Hip-Hop this term, were represented by Tilly Discombe Wells and Max Burchall, who had each created a rap using SoundTrap.

Whilst we look forward to when we can make music together again, we are so pleased that Lockdown has not diminished our pupils’ enthusiasm and dedication to music, and everyone deserves a huge 'pat on the back’ for their efforts this term. Well done all!
