Girls' sport round-up March 2020

Miss Chambers reports on sport for the girls.

Although our sporting seasons and term have been cut short, the girls have still had a good lot of fixtures and made great progress as individuals and in their teams. We still managed to get our Year 5 and 6 pop lacrosse in but unfortunately, we didn’t get to host our annual girls’ cross-country competition.

Despite our fixtures petering out from late February, the girls still remained focussed and driven in their PE and Games lessons. They also had the chance to try some slightly different things to usual. Year 7 and 8 played mixed hockey and netball. Year 6 played tag rugby and Year 5 played football and tag rugby. All of which seemed to be thoroughly enjoyed and it was nice to have this opportunity.

Netball

U13s

The As have played in eight matches winning four of them and have had three tournaments including IAPS regionals. They came 7th out of 28 schools at the Bryanston Tournament, 7th in our Westbourne House tournament and got to the quarter finals at IAPS. The Bs have played in nine matches and one tournament. Mrs Cobden and Miss Parrott have worked hard with them over the season and they have been engaged and made positive progress. Well done to all of you in your last netball season at Westbourne!

U12s

The U12As have played in seven matches and managed to win all of them with some real grit and determination. Their last match against Seaford, who seem to have become our rivals this season, was extremely close finishing 16-15 to us! They have played in four tournaments overall: the two big ones in this half term were SISNA and IAPS. The weather was awful at SISNA but the girls persevered very well and we decided we finished perfectly: 3rd in our pool so joint 5th overall. The girls had worked really hard for IAPS and came tantalisingly close. An extra point would have meant joint 2nd and an extra two points would have got them through to Nationals.  They lost to some teams they had previously beaten and put in good performances against others. As ever, consistency is key!

The Bs have played in eight matches winning five of them and our Westbourne House tournament. Again, their last match against Seaford was very close with Westbourne winning by just one goal.

The Cs also had eight matches winning three of them including their final match against Brighton College. Mrs Sutcliffe said that they made tremendous progress in their matches and the whole team were delightful – great company and always so enthusiastic regardless of the score and the opposition.

U11s

The U11As have had six matches, winning three of them. They have also played in five tournaments including IAPS regionals this half of term. Mrs Sleep says that the girls have made huge progress this season and this is testament to their incredible effort and attitude, both in matches and when training. They began with little confidence, suffering some defeats but completely turned this around beating Seaford and with their coach saying that this was the nicest game they had played.  Saying that, we should be proud that our girls are so respectful, kind and welcoming. They played well at IAPS: it was a very tough competition and they adapted well and never gave up.

The Bs have played in eight matches and one tournament. They won two of their matches and drew their last one against Seaford 3-3. Their matches have been close with the majority of them only having a couple of goals in it. Mrs Smith says that the team can now pass with greater accuracy and defend with determination. She has enjoyed coaching this team and has been impressed by the girls’ effort, progress and teamwork both on and off court.

Hockey

U10s

The U10As have played in eight matches and one tournament. They won the Westbourne House tournament before half term and have remained unbeaten winning six of their matches and drawing two. The Bs have played in six matches and the Westbourne House tournament. Their friendly matches were close and they won three and lost the other three, but only by one or two goals. The Cs have also played in six matches, sometimes as one team or split between two. They won against Brighton College and Windlesham and drew against Dunhurst and Twyford. They lost by just one goal to Highfield and had one win and one loss against Embley Park. Well done girls – you have all worked very hard this season and made great progress. You are a talented bunch and a pleasure to teach. Well done to those of you who tried being a GK too!

U9s

The U9s have played in five matches and the Westbourne House tournament. Sometimes they played as one team and other times they split into two. They beat Brighton Girls and Windlesham and drew with Great Ballard. They had mixed results against PGS and Twyford. They have scored 32 goals in total and conceded far less than they put into the back of the oppositions' goal. The girls demonstrated strong commitment during training sessions and a real hunger to succeed in their matches. Their stamina was impressive, highlighting the benefits of ‘Fitness Friday’ in boosting both their physical and mental strength. The girls' optimism, resilience and keenness to play made them an absolute joy to coach.

U8s

The U8 girls have played as two or three teams. Before half term they had tough matches against Twyford and then lots of playing experience in the Westbourne House Festival and mini matches with PGS. Since half term they played Great Ballard where one team drew 1-1 and the other won 2-0. The girls really enjoy training and playing in matches. Their listening skills, changing and organisation are generally improving which is helping us to cover more in sessions. Well done.

Pop Lacrosse

The Year 5 and 6 girls thoroughly enjoyed playing some Pop Lacrosse in games sessions and competing in their inter-patrol matches (results below). The Year 5 girls picked up the basic skills and rules quickly and there were lots of smiles on faces.

Swimming

Unfortunately, we only had one gala this half of term. The boys U9-U11 swimming match against Meoncross had to be cancelled as did the inter-patrol galas. The IAPS results have also been delayed. On 2 March, we went to Windlesham to compete against the home team and Highfield in their six-lane pool with our U9-U12 swimmers. The afternoon was a huge success with many students swimming out of age group to fill in for those who were unable to attend. In total, we had 11 individual PBs across the age groups and managed to win several races. We had four students compete in the individual medley for the first time in the season. Well done to Amelie Mazrani, Emily Stewart, Poppy Langmead and Sonny Tuppen for competing in this gruelling race! Overall this was an enjoyable afternoon with lots of students seeing some excellent results which is testament to all their hard work at swim squad.
