Courtroom drama unfolds

ORDER, order! Year 4 put on a mock trial, based on a full case study, complete with court clerk, judge, witnesses, jury, barristers, solicitors and court artists, as well as a public gallery, who did occasionally boo and were rightly called to order.

The defendant, Kerry Hicks, was played by Monty. Miss Hannan, Year 4 teacher, said: “It was so interesting to go through the trial. The children were really excited and volunteered for the various roles. There were three witnesses, who read their statements to the court, and the solicitors working with the barrister were very sharp and kept the questions coming throughout the cross examination. The court artists recorded the events for the media. The children were so engaged and working really hard. The jury left to deliberate before returning to deliver their verdict - guilty. Personally, I thought they came to right verdict; the evidence did stack up against Kerry Hicks.”

Mr Stewart, Year 4 teacher, who used to be a solicitor, said: "It was wonderful to see the children use their questioning and drama skills and totally immerse themselves in a world they knew nothing about. They were so curious and inquisitive and just wanted to find out as much as they could."
