Wind Band Workshop

A group of our orchestral musicians visited Charterhouse School to join with pupils from Charterhouse and other local schools at their annual Wind Band Workshop. The event saw the children spend time rehearsing music including Gershwin’s ‘Strike up the Band’ and Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’, making new friends along the way. The afternoon culminated in a performance in the school’s Concert Hall.

"Valerie was my favourite piece. It made me feel excited and important to be up there performing with so many people."

Curriculum Music Lessons

Our pupils cover a wide spectrum of musical history in their class music lessons, from the instruments and composers of the Baroque period to the film composers of the present day. Pupils in Year 8 are currently engrossed in a topic on Serialism and Minimalism, two forms of musical composition from the early twentieth century.

Mr Allum said: “Having been introduced to the large-scale romantic works of Tchaikovsky last year, our Year 8s have taken a leap forward in time and are working hard on their 12-tone row compositions, inspired by the works of expressionist and abstract artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian, and the musical works of Arnold Schoenberg. Beginning life as a number matrix, the pupils will write their melodies by hand and eventually play them into the computer and transform them into a piece using our composition software."
