Instruments of the orchestra

"I enjoyed the Theatre Ghost piece because they used the music to tell the story."

Aidan, Year 3

What better way to bring to life Year 3's learning about various instruments of the orchestra than to go an see an orchestra in action. Our pupils enjoyed a fun programme of music performed by local orchestra Southern Pro Musica, conducted by Jonathan Willcocks and compered by the entertaining magician Neil Henry.

The children had plenty to say about their trip:

"I spotted Mrs Peskett from our school playing the viola in the orchestra," said George.

Yeva enjoyed 'the Theatre Ghost piece and the magic’, whereas Peter loved 'watching the drummer play on the bongo drums at the back of the orchestra’.

75% of our Prep School pupils play a musical instrument and it is always fun to see your instrument in the orchestra setting. Oscar commented: "I liked listening to the trumpeter in the Trumpet Concerto because I play the trumpet and it is my favourite instrument.’

Other children enjoyed seeing their favourite instruments being played too: "I enjoyed seeing people play the flute,” commented Edwina, and for Eloise it was the violins that captured her attention.

Peter and William enjoyed the compere's tricks: "the magician took a 10ft ladder out of his brief case" and "there was a great cup trick!”

Edwina enjoyed the dancers who came up on stage during the Can Can piece.

It was a fantastic visit to Chichester Festival Theatre and some brilliant commentary on the experience by our Year 3s.
