Winchester Science Centre welcomes Years 3 and 4
Year 3 and 4 spent a day at the fantastic Winchester Science Centre engaged in an array of activities and workshops.
"We were warmly greeted and the staff were immediately impressed with the enthusiasm of our pupils in the workshops. Year 3 learnt how rockets take off, before then having the chance to create their own rockets! They tackled the tricky task of improving their efficacy by considering friction, mass and aerodynamics. Whether it was the 'skyscanner', the 'blaster' or the 'tormentor', the performance of every rocket creation improved when the children applied their new knowledge to their designs. There were squeals of delight from the crowd!" Mrs Pitman, Year 3 teacher.
Year 4 had an exciting and educational time during their workshop, The Story of Us. They impressed with their existing knowledge of the human body and built on this by learning all about circulation. The hands-on activities were a highlight of the day. First, they tested their lung capacity to investigate whether being taller means having bigger lung capacity. Then came the most unforgettable part—dissecting a lamb’s heart! The children were fascinated as they explored the heart’s chambers and pathways, making for an experience they’ll be talking about for a long time.
Mrs Davies added: "Lunch followed, with barely a crumb left in sight. We then headed off to the interactive planetarium where we explored the night sky. We had an excellent talk and became fully immersed in life in outer space. Our young stargazers are sure to be looking up in the sky regularly to see if they can find the big dipper, the small dipper and Polaris."
The rest of the afternoon was spent exploring all the hands-on exhibits in the museum; each one with its own unique learning point. The children were curious and explored sound, optical illusions, how boats stay afloat, pressure, friction and so much more.
Everyone had a very enjoyable time and the teachers were delighted to see excellent behaviour and courteous manners from the Westbourne House junior pupils.
