Earning Bunsen burner licences

Our Year 5 scientists undertook a special Westbourne House School rite of passage: getting their Bunsen burner licences.

In Year 5, our pupils start learning the three sciences with subject specialist teachers.  A key part of their chemistry lessons is learning to use the equipment safely and today it was 5Ws chance to show their teacher that they could remember how to light and extinguish a Bunsen burner safely.

Miss Day said: “This lesson always brings a smile to the children's faces and today was no different. Orange safety flames turn into blue roaring flames at the turn of a collar - ask your young person if you are unsure! The aim is to encourage their confidence, safety and introduce them to a key piece of equipment in the chemistry tool kit. I'm happy to say that all of 5W were successful in achieving their licenses!”
