Devising plays

Whodunnit murder mystery experience

The whole of Year 7 united for a day of drama and deception at their Murder Mystery Festival. Anyone who knows Mr Cousens, head of drama, knows that this day was not done by half measures: the children spent all day in costume, which ranged from suits to high vis jackets, and it was up to each child to devise their own character, costume and props. In small groups, they created the play itself, coming up with many original and inventive ideas.

When the plays were ready, the Murder Mystery Festival could begin. The audience needed to watch each play carefully to weigh up motives, study flashback scenes with critical eyes and finally guess the murderer! It proved to be an incredibly fun and thought-provoking experience.

"Our murder mystery was solvable by paying attention to the finer details. The victim had a pencil tucked behind his ear, which mysteriously ended up in the murderer's pocket!"

Year 7 murder mystery winner

Everyone agreed that the cutest culprit by far was Mr Cousens' dog, Truffles, who makes a special appearance every year.  The winning skill of the day was originality and collaborative creativity.
