With their classmates and friends watching, Tigers and Otters in Year 6, 7 and 8 stepped up in the debating final and took on a tough topic: Should competitive sport be banned at Westbourne House?
The Tigers took to floor first and led with their ‘for’ arguments. They had a strong start by stating that sport builds resilience and creates quality time to spend with friends.
The Otters replied in full force arguing that it can knock people's mental health and makes sports players more prone to injuries.
After counterbalances, questions and persuasive points, it was time for the judges to deliberate. The pupils in the audience discussed the ideas raised amongst themselves, coming to their own final conclusions.
“The Tigers had a strong sense of freedom of speech, they were enthusiastic and their arguments well structured.

Miss Williams encouraged younger audience members to give it a go next time. She said: "Speaking in front of an audience, with heart, is a vital skill and experience at a Westbourne House debate helps you to build your confidence and develop a 'can do' attitude that will set you up for success at future schools and in life."
