Drama

Our innovative Drama curriculum is complemented by a wealth of extra-curricular activities. It is a department that thrives on harnessing the talents of each individual, urging pupils to transcend boundaries of creativity previously deemed unreachable.

All pupils receive weekly Drama lessons that provide a broad and diverse journey into the world of Drama. From exploring the work of theatre practitioners to undertaking lessons in devised, scripted and improvised theatre, there is something for everyone and sets pupils up with useful skills for their senior schools.  Classes are designed to be tremendously fun whilst nurturing and cultivating important skills in collaborative creativity.

Challenges are diverse, from studying and performing play excerpts to undergoing enriching devised tasks. Pupils have the opportunity to be involved in a wide array of productions.

Shows are designed to not only provide a platform for the outstanding and talented to take their Drama to the next level, but also to urge the apprehensive and shy to experience the thrill of theatre and be a part of something special. All-inclusive shows with equal speaking parts are regularly staged.

The aim is for all involved to discover a capacity for invention they may never have known they possess.  Productions vary from straight plays to elaborate musicals and pupils can also specialise in technical fields.

Years 7 & 8

Year 7 are challenged to stage an all-inclusive straight play designed to provide every pupil, regardless of ability, with their own equal moment in the limelight. Every child appears on stage in an attempt to take their Drama to the next level.

Year 8 participate in a musical undertaken with extraordinary ambition. Every aspect of the play is addressed with astounding levels of detail. From live orchestras to costumes that rival the West End, everyone involved enjoys setting truly audacious theatrical goals.

Years 5 & 6

Year 5 perform in a large Evening of Drama to showcase the scripted work they have been studying in class. Under a given theme, the production asks every pupil in the year to perform colourfully challenging roles on the stage in front of a large audience.

Year 6 stage an uplifting musical designed to introduce the pupils to musical theatre from a young age.  Any pupil wanting to be in the show is guaranteed a place and auditions are held for some colossally elevating roles that pupils enjoy immersing themselves in.

Years 3 & 4

The Juniors are challenged to stage all-encompassing productions whereupon every single member of Year 3 and 4 participate in end of year extravaganzas that flaunt the talents and interests of all involved.

Rehearsals begin in the Easter term and the shows cater for all to have their own speaking lines and enjoy the buzz of staging a theatrical production. The performances take place in the summer.

Further theatrical experiences are also on offer. From speech and drama tuition through the LAMDA Exam program to exciting off-site theatre trips, the performing arts are a prominent part of life at Westbourne House.
