Yum yum!

Year One have been learning about food! We have smelt, tasted, listened, looked and touched our way through a variety of items and discovered how important our senses are when exploring different types of food. The children were able to identify healthy and unhealthy food options and we have also discussed the importance of keeping fit.

We were treated to a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the school kitchen and saw how to prepare lunch for 500 people every day. We tasted some of the fresh ingredients that were being used in our school lunch and learnt about how to store food safely in the giant fridges. Margaret showed us her secret tip for chopping onions without crying and we left with a special treat to have for our morning snack.

This half term culminated in a fantastic trip to Pizza Express in Chichester. There was great excitement as we entered the restaurant. We were greeted by Geoff, who gave us a special chef hat and apron to wear. We certainly looked the part as ‘pizzaiolos’ for the morning! He talked to us about the ingredients that are used to make the pizzas and how the dough is kneaded and cooked. He showed us how they stretch the dough by throwing it up in the air and even challenged Mrs Rich to do the same. Thankfully the pizza did not land on the floor! We then spread passata on the pizza base followed by a sprinkling of cheese, ready to be cooked in the oven. Soon the delicious smell of yummy pizza filled the air and after only four minutes our pizzas were ready. Yum, yum!

We have learnt so much about making pizzas. We were amazed to discover that there were 156 tomatoes in one large tin of passata and that the oven used to cook the pizzas can reach a top temperature of 400 degrees! The children all had a wonderful time and certainly enjoyed making and eating their delicious, fresh pizzas.
