Year 7 leadership day reflects High Performance Learning

The Year 7 Leadership Day is an annual fixture and gives the Year 7 pupils the opportunity to self-assess their skills and demonstrate their ability to work as a team. These are, of course, essential skills to take them through Year 8 and beyond.

During the day, Year 7 faced logistical problems, team building exercises with lots of scope for collaborative work, and tasks which required logical thinking.

Mr Pitman set out the tasks describing what needed to be achieved. The children were then given cards with the full range of characteristics and values needed for High Performance Learning. They had to decide which of the characteristics and values would be the most important for performing well in the tasks.

Perseverance, flexible thinking and strategy planning were chosen. Over the day they were asked to focus on specific occasions when they persevered, planned, and thought flexibly.

Marbles were awarded to each group based on the elements of success of the task.

The feedback session took place the next day in a classroom environment after a good night's sleep and breakfast! The groups were mixed up and the pupils were encouraged to reflect on their personal experiences.

It was a challenging and demanding, yet thoroughly rewarding day. Very well done to all the participants at the end of a very busy term.
