Taking dinosaur steps

"It was an absolutely stunning day," said Mrs Pollock about Year 5's geography trip to the Isle of Wight, "and so many exciting things happened. Probably the highlight was the discovery, by one of our pupils, of a NEW dinosaur footprint fossil in Alum Bay.  Florence was the lucky pupil to make the find."

Florence told us: "We were all looking for fossils and some people had found a giant footprint in the sand. I found this other footprint and the expert told me it was a new one.  It is from a young dinosaur and he knew that because of the size of the footprint.  Mr Berry could pick it up but it was really heavy."

The other children found large dinosaur footprint fossils on the beach plus lignite (compressed peat fossils), petrified wood and mineral pyrite (fool's gold).

"I loved the Isle of Wight. I've never been and I'm going to ask my parents to take me back."

Whilst the trip to the Needles was cancelled due to the strong winds, the children had the chance to learn how glass is made, watch some glass being blown and to fill up a tube with some of the 21 different shades of sand you can find in Alum Bay.

Mr James said: "The fossil expert at Alum Bay was amazed by the knowledge of our children and their enthusiasm to answer questions and share what they know.  We were very proud of Year 5."
