Sports round-up - October 2025

Mr Hanley and Mrs Cook, our heads of sport, share news of half a term of games and training.

Cross Country

Our term began on a high note with great success in the Seaford College Cross Country events.  Our Year 3 girls also won their U8 event, which was a great introduction for them to cross country competitions. They had three top 10 finishers including Margot L, who came first overall.

Our U9 boys, U9 girls and U10 boys teams all finished in second place. Mrs Cook commented: "I was really impressed by all our Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 pupils for their positive attitude, their hard work and the smiles on their faces as they came across the finish line."

The strong showing from Westbourne House continued at the subsequent Seaford College meet for Years 7 & 8.

Our U12 boys and U12 girls ran their hearts out and performed so well as a team they were champions of their groups. The U13 boys came second and U13 girls missed out on second place by just one point.

This success across the year groups set a fantastic, determined tone for the rest of the half term. Well done to all runners.

Boys' Report

With the arrival of half term, we have the chance to reflect on a very busy seven or so weeks, filled with plenty of sunshine and lots of matches. Without including tournament play, we have played almost 90 football matches as a school with every pupil having the opportunity to play a number of fixtures and in a number of positions. Including tournaments, our competitive fixture number soars up to almost 150 matches. Our win percentage sits at approximately 60%, which demonstrates competitive fixtures and a good balance of results.

Special shout outs
Well done to the following teams and individuals who deserve some special recognition for the achievements this football season so far:

  • U11As: lost in the Plate final of the Charterhouse Tournament and won the plate final of the Lancing Prep Schools Tournament.

Things to look forward to . . . . .
When we return from half term we have a little over a week until we see the completion of the football season with our inter-patrol football days, which will undoubtedly be hotly contested! After this the rugby season begins! Although our training has already begun, our preparations ramp up a little after half term before our early season fixtures against Seaford and Windlesham.  We have many fixtures and tournaments in the diary, so fingers crossed for some mild weather!

Girls' Report

After the great start in cross country, the momentum continued with excellent participation and skill shown across hockey (Years 5–8) and netball (Years 3 & 4).

A huge shout out must go to our junior netball teams, who have played incredible netball throughout the term. They showed so much understanding of not only the rules but the tactics as well, demonstrating this fantastically in every fixture.

Capping off the half term strongly, the Colts C team demonstrated a formidable performance in the C team hockey tournament we hosted at home. We saw really great work and perseverance from those girls!

I am very much looking forward to the next half term. We will see the conclusion of our current season fixtures and welcome the exciting start of the new seasons: hockey for Years 3 and 4, and netball for Years 5 - 8.

I wish all the girls a restful and well-deserved half term break. They have certainly earned it after the immense effort and dedication they've put into their training sessions and competitive fixtures.

Swimming Gala Victory - eight years in the making!

The annual showdown of Westbourne House vs Highfield swimming gala is always a highlight of the year. And you could see the effort that pupils from both schools put into every single race.

It was very close last year, and this year - for the first time in eight years - Westbourne House swimmers pulled ahead! It was undoubtedly, one of the most exciting and memorable moments of the half term!

This well-fought victory was only possible due to the team's combined effort. A special and huge shout out must go to Jonty, who stepped into the challenging 50m Butterfly event last minute to support the overall team score. As we know, butterfly is not the easiest stroke to master, and in competition, it is perhaps even harder. His decision to go for it exemplifies the team spirit we saw on the day.

So a HUGE congratulations to the Westbourne House swimmers. Mrs Pullen commented: "We were really strong in the relays, winning seven out of 10 and coming second in three of these, which gave us lots of points. Highfield won more of the individual events - 11 to our 9 - but when the final scores came in, Westbourne House had 204 to Highfields 192."

Well done to all the swimmers! What a great contest!
