Sandwich Wednesday

What was first thing you learnt to make or cook in the kitchen when you were little?

Every Wednesday, our Reception children make their own sandwich at school at snack time: they choose and spread their filling, put the sandwich together and cut it in half.

Our Reception teaching team, Mrs Rogers and Mrs Lewis, said: "We introduced Sandwich Wednesday for so many reasons: spreading the filling helps the children build up their fine motor skills, they cut the sandwich in half which builds strength in their wrists, both of which support their handwriting.

"We also love Sandwich Wednesdays because the children choose their filling and we can discuss and encourage them to make healthy choices within certain parameters.

"The children get a wonderful sense of independence and satisfaction making their very own snack and in normal circumstances, at school, they head straight off to PE full of energy thanks to their sandwich and fruit break! We felt it was important to keep this activity going in lockdown because the children love it and it's familiar to them which is so important at this time. It also brings together the key worker children who are at school and the children at home."
