Rocks, soil and woodland treasures

Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic day out at Seeley Copse near Goodwood, participating in a series of activities to support the science topic of Rocks and Soils.

Wow! What a day!  We set off excitedly looking forward to our visit to Seeley Copse, a local ancient woodland on Goodwood Home Farm.

The day started with a workshop about different rocks and soils with plenty of hands-on investigating.  This included some lovely, mucky experiments with different soils, exploring the contents, particle size and porosity; and learning about the benefits of composting! A woodland and farm walk were also great fun and gave us the opportunity to discover local rocks and soils and how they are used.

At lunch time, everyone enjoyed a huge picnic spread, which we ate outside.

During the afternoon session observation skills were put to the test on a woodland treasure hunt. The children were encouraged to look carefully up high and beneath their feet at the woodland floor.  We were lucky enough to find a badger sett and the children were quick to show they know many facts about nocturnal creatures.

We then went deeper into the woods to find some excellent locations for building dens.  Surrounded by the very best den building materials, the children set off in groups to make the most creative and solid dens they could in their patrols. The teachers were all seriously impressed with the structures that the children created and their teamwork was superb. Well done.  We finished the day celebrating everyone’s achievements with hot chocolate, sitting on great fallen logs.   A  memorable day for everyone involved.
