Hotly contested inter-patrol matches

Mr Hanley reports on the boys' inter-patrol matches in the Easter term 2020.

Senior Inter-Patrol Rugby

The senior inter-patrol rugby was hotly contested this year. Due to a cancellation of hockey fixtures, it gave us a full afternoon in which to play lots of rugby, with all senior children involved.

The number of pupils varies quite dramatically in each patrol so we had to be inventive with the numbers in each team and the format, but we came up with something that involved everybody and also ensured that each child counted for their patrol.

The standard of rugby on show was really high but more importantly, the team work, sportsmanship and camaraderie between each team was a pleasure to see. The Year 7 pupils stepped up really well and many influenced the games for their teams.

These events are always super competitive and this years event was no different with all patrols managing to record victories somewhere along the line.

Inter-Patrol Hockey

The inter-patrol hockey events continue to go from strength to strength. Year on year the depth of quality within each year group is improving which makes for very even competitions.

Again it was excellent to see the quality of hockey on show but what was also really pleasing was the way each team played together.

It can be tricky when you merge year groups as they have often not played together but in both the Intermediate and Senior events, each team gelled really nicely and all worked hard for each other.

As with the rugby the games were incredibly even, with lots of end to end hockey being played and what is nice with the hockey, is that teams that dominate the other sports, don’t always win the hockey. Other patrols often shine though!
