Girls' sport round-up - Dec 2019

Emma Chambers, Head of Girls' Sport, rounds up half a term of sport.

The second half of term has seen the seniors and U11s finish their hockey season and the U8s-U10s finish their netball season. It will be all change after Christmas with matches for the top end of the school in netball and the younger end of the school in hockey. The Year 8 girls had their hockey tour during October half term to Holland and we have also had two swimming galas.

I spoke briefly about progress in my first half term round-up of this academic year while referring to the book ‘Bounce’. I believe the pupils have made great progress over the term both in terms of individual and team performance. It is also important to think about progress not just in terms of performance but also in developing resilience and perseverance. Sport is a great vehicle for enhancing these valuable life skills. Progress should not be measured by the team in which pupils are in but the performance on the court or pitch, their attitude and approach to sport, and feedback they are given both verbally and written in match reports. Progress can be made but if everyone is making equal progress then the teams will stay the same, and this is an important realisation for motivation and enjoyment.

The 3rd VII are top of the stats with the highest win rate of just over 60%, the highest goal difference and conceded the least with five clean sheets! However, the 4th VII scored the most goals and averaged just under four goals per match. The 1st VII averaged just under three goals per match, the 2nd VII averaged just over three goals per match and the 5th VII averaged two goals per match and they all kept two clean sheets! The 1st VII have finished off the season as ‘Team of the Week’ for their work over the whole term.

The girls have had a fantastic season regularly putting out five competitive teams. The players have shown big improvements having worked hard in training and matches, and there have been many successful performances. The results do not always reflect some of the performances the girls have put in but they always come back ready to go again. They have been committed and have played the game fair but hard and have always kept it all in perspective. Little by little, each team has reached their training targets.

Good luck to all of those leaving us for senior school and we wish you all the best in your future hockey careers. Keep working hard and, most importantly, keep enjoying it.

The As have had a tough season and have worked really hard scoring an average of just over two goals per match. The Bs have scored a whopping 63 goals working out as just over five goals per match. They have a goal difference of 37, kept five clean sheets and a win rate of 75%, the highest out of all hockey teams this season.

It has been an enjoyable season for the U11s and the progress the girls have made has been fantastic. They have continued to be great ambassadors for Westbourne with their sportsmanship and team spirit shining; one member of staff commented ‘I have never worked with such a lovely group of girls who exemplify the qualities we need to instil in all of our Westbourne sportsmen and women’. Both teams have had an array of success with some tough competitors too. They have shown good perseverance to develop their weaknesses and their support of each other has been outstanding - making them a great group of girls to coach. The As attended the Bryanston tournament and did well in the group stage. It was a good opportunity to play some talented and unknown opposition. The Bs have been awarded ‘Team of the Week’ for their unequivocal effort, exemplary sportsmanship and very impressive track record.

U10s

The U10s have been really enthusiastic and worked well together improving both as individuals and as a team. They have worked hard and shown good team work and determination. They have been a pleasure to coach and they have had lots of fun. Their netball skills have grown and the coaches are very proud.

U9s

The U9s have grown in confidence on the netball court. The coaches are proud of their performances and the improvements from every single player. They have worked very well as a team. Whether playing 5 or 7-a-side they can now string together some great sequences of play passing the ball effectively towards our goal. Well done.

U8s

The U8s have made a strong start to their competitive netball careers at Westbourne House. They have played mainly 5-a-side matches but have also had the odd 7-a-side match too. They are aware of all of the positions and they can play a variety of them well. They have enjoyed their matches and they have been trying very hard. Their passing has improved in accuracy and they are good at intercepting the ball now as they understand the game more. They have made great progress with their footwork in particular, but also their catching, dodging and marking.

Swimming

This second half term we have had a home gala against Hurst and a girls only gala for Years 4-6 against Meoncross, PHS and Boundary Oak. Next term there will be a boys only Years 4-6 gala against Meoncross, a full gala home to Highfield and one away to Windlesham, IAPS and the inter-patrol galas!

Against Hurst it was close throughout and we narrowly took the win with 118 points to 113. There were 14 individual PBs and six 1st place results. We also came 1st in five of the relays. In the girls gala we won with 60 points, eight clear of Meoncross in 2nd place. There were four new PBs in the individual races with five 1st place results. We also came 1st in three of the relays.

Due to IAPS changing some of the distances there were some new school records set in the gala against Hurst. These were:

  • U12 50m Butterfly - Amelie Mazrani
  • U11 50m Butterfly - Emily Stewart
  • U11 50m Front Crawl - Alexis Bartholomew (a year young)
  • U11 50m Back Crawl - Jasmin Hafez
  • U11 50m Breaststroke - Sonny Tuppen

Well done!
