End of Season Sports Round-Up

Mr Smith and Miss Lane share with you an end of season sports round-up

Athletics

After half term we moved into the athletics season, which started with both senior and junior sports days. There were plenty of personal bests at the Year 3 and 4 event, especially in the sprints. Rocco M was the top Year 4 boy with Cynthia J excelling for the girls. Rory O’C and Lucy A took the honours in the Year 3 competition. Freddie W and Hetty B won the long jump events, while Wilf R won the ball throw in an impressive style. While Year 4 were busy competing in their field events, the Year 3s enjoyed the Westbourne traditions of the dress up sprint and the egg and spoon race. Owls ran out the overall winners in the patrol event and great fun was had by all.

Senior sports day was very different this year and the sports department worked incredibly hard to rotate the year groups throughout the morning to ensure a safe and exciting day. Rafferty M set a new school record for triple jump and lots of the shot-put records were also broken. It was amazing to see so many boys and girls keen to run in the 1500m to gain an extra point for their patrol. Tigers were the overall winners of the senior sports day.

The Year 4 & 5 county athletics followed at Hurst with lots of personal bests from all who competed. Particularly impressive were Oliver A who was victorious in both the 1500m and high jump and a special mention must go to Cynthia J for winning best overall female athlete: she got first place in the 75m sprint and a new personal best on the day. Unfortunately, the weather interfered with the senior event at the K2 in Crawley and our senior athletes were denied the opportunity to shine at county level.

Cricket

In cricket, the U13 girls were rewarded with a number of hard ball matches which further developed their skills. As a result of excellence shown Daisy T, Amelie M, Honour B, Olivia M, Poppy L, Amelie R and Annabel D were all awarded well deserved full cricket colours.

We were able to play some mixed hardball cricket at U11 level which was very popular and fruitful. We saw big improvements in U10 girls and the mighty U8 red team, who completed the season undefeated. Also undefeated were the U10A girls and U11A girls teams. The U12A boys team completed an all-victorious season with Louie L and Fergus O’C breaking the record for the most half century opening partnerships in a season. Other teams to impress were the U11A boys and the U9A boys, while the U8A boys show huge potential for the future. Freddie G, Theo C, William F, Tom S, Felix L and George B were all rewarded for a combination of excellence, sportsmanship and commitment in cricket with full colours. It was great to see the passion amongst all the children and with over 140 matches played and a 70% win, the students should all feel very proud of their achievements.
