Bringing Geography to life

All of the Year 6 children went to visit the River Cuckmere and the Seven Sisters Country Park this week.

With a park ranger, the children explored and found various locations in the park on Ordnance Survey maps and compared these to both what they could see and to aerial photographs. At the same time the guide taught Year 6 about the chalk landscape, fauna, flora and the local history of the area. This complemented the work that the children have been doing on mapping in the classroom this year.

In the afternoon, with Mr James and Mrs Pollock, the children learnt about river and coastal processes, which serves as a brilliant introduction to their River and Coasts module in Year 7. The children learnt about meanders and ox-bow lakes and produced some excellent field sketches of the meanders in the River Cuckmere. Then they went down to the beach and learnt about headlands and bays, coastal protection and finally acted out the process of longshore drift using tennis balls!
