Sport for excellence, sport for all

Beyond PE and games lessons

We organise sports tours that reap huge benefits in terms of the children’s skills and playing experience, as well as being a special cultural experience for the children. We have annual trips for senior boys and girls to a variety of destinations such as Barcelona, Netherlands and South Africa and for a variety of sports depending on the preferences of that year group such as football, netball, hockey and cricket.

We organise extensive matches and tournaments against other schools and all ability levels have the opportunity to play competitive sport.

Children enjoy kayaking and canoeing in the pool and on the lake.

There are extensive extra-curricular clubs after school including ballet, football, judo, fencing and gymnastics from their first school year up to Year 8. From Year 3 up, further options are available including golf, athletics, girls’ cricket, tennis, swimming and modern and street dance.

Our boarders also enjoy Real Tennis training and matches after school. Real Tennis is the original racquet sport from which the modern game of tennis derived.

Head of Boys’ PE & Games

Although I have been at Westbourne House for 38 years, I still teach with the same passion and enthusiasm as I did when I first started. My brief career as a professional cricketer with Sussex CCC and playing youth team football with Portsmouth has stood me in good stead with the relevant qualifications to lead the boys’ sport.

Westbourne House has built up an outstanding reputation for sport over the years and we always have a large number of children playing to a very high standard. My aim however is to make sure that all my boys find some area of strength and leave us with a confidence to continue to the next stage.

Head of Girls’ PE & Games

I am a qualified hockey coach, netball coach and umpire. I have also attended CPD in swimming, athletics, cricket, badminton, rounders and climbing. As I teenager I played county hockey and recently I have played county league netball. I would say netball is my passion but I will throw my hand at most things! With my varied experience in both senior and prep schools, I believe I can help further develop sports participation and performance here at Westbourne House. Stretching the more able performers while ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to compete regularly at a level appropriate to them. Sport and activity is such an important part of people’s lives due to the huge impact it has on physical, social and mental health. To see kids progress and enjoy sport is something I find very satisfying and I get to witness that a lot at Westbourne. I love their enthusiasm, engagement and sportsmanship.
